Bacon and Eggs and God. Come and Dine

Above

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

In Chapter Three of James’ epistle, James describes the so-called-wisdom of the world. Typical human thinking is most often driven by envy and selfish ambition; the result being discontent and disorder as seen in our world. Selfish ambition creates a plethora of contradictory goals that allow for hurting other people in order to get what we want.

In verse 17, James describes the characteristics of the wisdom that is from above. This is God’s wisdom. This is the wisdom of those who love God and trust him to provide all they need. As a result, these believers willingly sacrifice opportunities for increased wealth, pleasure and power. Instead, they seek opportunities to serve the needs of others. The result of Godly wisdom is very different than selfish, worldly ambition.

James describes Godly wisdom as “pure;” meaning, “genuine; real; true; incorrupt.” Godly wisdom is also peaceable. It is gentle, not ready to fight, but ready to serve. This wisdom is prepared and willing to be called upon when others need help. True wisdom is full of mercy. It is impartial, never showing favoritism. This wisdom is sincere, without hypocrisy. It is real and it has no need of false appearances.

A man who is not wise cannot acquire wisdom by his own efforts, but any man can acquire knowledge by way of study and memory. A man may be wise, and yet, illiterate and a man may be knowledgeable, and yet, a fool.

Life becomes much easier and more pleasant life when a Christian obtains and uses the wisdom that comes from God. Selfishness is replaced by service. They cease trying to obtain those things they previously desired, and were chasing after, with reckless abandon. Godly wisdom replaces that worldly agenda. And the only way to give up that agenda is to believe that our God is providing all we need in every moment.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
