Bacon, Eggs and God

Take Nothing But A Stick And The Shoes On Your Feet

And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits; And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse: But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

Imagine for a moment that you have the responsibility of sending out the disciples. So you start planning for their trip. Let’s see: accommodations, transportation, funds; yes, they will need some money. I mean, you can’t send them on a journey without certain things. Right?

But we read how Jesus sent them out. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff and the sandals on their feet; no bread, no money and not even a change of clothes.

Maybe you have come to think of God as being like some corporate giant; a chief executive officer or chief financial officer or chief operating officer, all wrapped up in one.

That kind of rationalization totally misses the point about an Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent God, because his ways are radically different to ours. Imagine…sending them out with no money! But if you read all of the accounts of their journeys in Matthew, Mark and Luke you will learn that our sovereign God provided food and shelter for these disciples.

You see, his ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

There, he said it!

We just have to trust him.
