Bacon, Eggs and God

Bacon and Eggs and God. Come and Dine

Counsel

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Throughout my Christian life there have been those times when I stumbled and fell. And every time it has been for one of two reasons: Either I did not seek godly counsel or I did not heed it when given.

When making life’s important decisions, we should not trust solely on ourselves, because, as human beings, we are biased toward self. In the physical world, things take the path of least resistance and spiritually speaking, most people will also take the way of least resistance. You can expect that our human nature will always take the path that benefits itself, even if it is at the expense of others.

The old axiom says, “Two heads are better than one.” But that is only true when the other head is mature and seasoned with godly wisdom. It is godly counsel that is needed, not the counsel of the ungodly. When we go to the latter, we show we are seeking agreement, not advice. Rehoboam, king of Judah, lost everything because he turned his back on the wise counsel of the old men and sought that of his foolish young companions.

And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men, And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Both in public and private affairs, wise counsel makes for good choices. Even the wisest among us are given to blunders. So do not try to go it alone. Cast your independence and pride aside and seek out some wise counselors. You will be safe in doing so!

And when asked to give advice, seek to help, not to please.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Remember, the Scriptures guide us when we adhere to the instructions found there.
