Body and Soul

Someone once asked, “why are you so involved in feeding programs?”

Yes, sharing the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ is extremely valuable, but those persons who are desperately hungry won’t really pay much attention to the spiritual help you give them unless you help them with their pressing physical needs first. They won’t care how much you know about the gospel, until you they know how much you care about them.

But when you minister to poor people holistically – both body and soul – you can give them real hope. And hope opens the door to being able to talk about the gospel.

It grieves me to know that 30,000 people die everyday from the effects of starvation and diseases directly related to malnutrition.

It is written, But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

When we become aware of those who are in need of food, of raiment, of shelter; or sick, and poor, and unable to provide for his own wants and those of their family, we ought to be willing to make the necessary sacrifices to relieve them in their distresses; and that if we are unwilling to do this, we can have no evidence that the love of God dwells in us.
